Again, this isn’t a real post.  I would simply like your opinion on something I’ve been mulling around in my head.

With regard to blogging, do you feel more of a connection to a particular post or blogger with whom you interact when they post photos of themselves, family, life, whatever, in and around their blog?  Does seeing the photos make them more relatable to you?  And if so, why?

This is something I’ve been going back and forth with since I started my blog.  I write about a lot of stuff with my kids and family, but I am always hesitant to put real photos of them or myself on this blog because it’s a public medium.  I do have the one small image of myself on my home page, and even that small photo was difficult for me to allow.  I don’t know….I guess I feel more exposed when there are so many real photos floating around the internet, and there is a small measure of security in physical anonymity, especially since I write about personal things and experiences.  And I don’t do selfies.

On the flip side of that, I can understand how it would be easier to relate to a person when you have visual cues and context to go along with a post.  I know I enjoy seeing pictures on other blogs, and it always makes me feel like I’m making too big of a deal out of it on my own blog.  I do post family photos on my private Facebook page, but I am very careful with security settings and I am conservative with what I post.  On a blog, no matter how conservative you are, the whole world can still see it.

So what do you think?  Do real pictures make a difference?  Do you enjoy a blog more, or a post more if you have real pictures to help tell the story?

  1. It’s part of it. I find that I’m more attracted, if you will, to the words. What I find truly endearing about blogging is that I get to know someone through their words and heart, rather than through their smiles.

  5. I post photos of my pets and have a couple of me, but would never include family members. I respect their privacy and my blog is more about dumb shit that happens to ME and doesn’t have anything to do with them!

  6. I think without pictures, some blogs would be much less entertaining. Pictures of at least the writer give the blog a much more personal feel. Of course I’m saying this when I have almost no pictures of myself on my blog. I work for a big corporation with lots of people and I say a lot of stupid and embarrassing stuff.

  7. I always like the pictures with the information, it make the person more relatable. No matter what you do there are many crackpots who will go to any length to mess up things. it might be safer just to post pictures of pets.etc. I would go to great lengths not to reveal my location. Maybe not even names. It’s so crazy what people do on the internet, and you don’t usually see it coming, especially as your site becomes more popular and extends beyond family and friends.

  8. I love words. I savor the lines. Though it’s also nice to have one picture of you (your profile photo) because then I have a launching pad for imagining you speak through your post.

    When I started my blog, I decided it will be one of personal stories of leadership that cut across work and life. I have introduced some photos but with the permission of family. Most of them are framed using their backs or partial frames. But more of a decision point for me were the details that I included, or not.

    My advice is to go slowly and talk it through with impacted people. If in doubt, wait, rather than rush into it.
